Step 1
Check around your home for environments that may harbor silverfish. They prefer a warm, moist environment, so they may breed in substances such as mulch. Also check carefully under shake roofs and siding, where molds may provide the perfect silverfish environment.
-
Step 2
Seal all cracks or holes going from your basement, attic or crawlspace into the house. Silverfish often establish themselves in these environments, then enter the home.
-
Step 3
Remove the food supply. Seal storage boxes tightly, or store food, clothing, papers and books in plastic containers with lids that will keep silverfish out.
-
Step 4
Use silverfish bait. Some baits work with boron and are therefore safe to use, even if you have children or pets in the home.
-
Step 5
Try dusting or spraying. Go to a home and garden store and choose from a variety of products that are made for this purpose. Many experts report that dusting is more effective than spraying, but you still may need several applications.
-
Step 6
Call a pest control company if you are unable to control a silverfish infestation yourself.

on 8/31/2008 Hi SixPaws, You will definitely have to get rid of silverfish eggs in order to stop them from coming back into your home all the time. For a complete solution on how to do it without chemicals see this site: http://www.getridofsilverfish.com

on 1/9/2008 If I try to rid my house of silverfish, will they still be in my clothes and books, or their eggs? Will mothballs kill them or just make them leave? If I am moving to a new home, how do I sterilize my clothing and books before leaving so I don't take silverfish with me?

on 11/22/2005 I got rid of ants by spraying lemon Endust and lemon Pledge around areas where I saw them. Ants don't like lemons, leaving a cut open lemon around will deter them.

on 11/22/2005 I stopped seeing silver fish after I tucked moth balls into corners and behind furniture in my rooms.
