Step 1
Decide whether your father is an activist or a spectator. Does he play as well as watch?
-
Step 2
Purchase tickets to a game. An obvious choice. Get into your dad's favorite field, stadium or court, if possible. Home games are always more festive.
-
Step 3
Hide the tickets inside a biography of his favorite player, or within the sleeve of an excellent documentary video.
-
Step 4
Plan a trip to a sports hall of fame or some similar venue, or perhaps a sports memorabilia museum.
-
Step 5
Buy a fish creel, if angling is his game. Pad it with fishing line, lead weights, needle-nose pliers and a pocketknife.
-
Step 6
Pick up something new for your dad: a baseball glove, football, tennis racket or some running shoes.
-
Step 7
Try a gift certificate to his favorite sporting goods store. Or go the safe and easy route by buying a ball cap with his favorite sports team emblem.
-
Step 8
Take him to dinner: Find a dim sports bar (any place with excellent beer and a big-screen TV) and treat him to a meal.
-
Step 9
Get really fancy (a.k.a. expensive) and send him abroad: Think the British crew races between Oxford and Cambridge, or the Olympics in Australia.
