Selling artwork can be lucrative if you do your research first.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Have the artwork appraised. Look online and in the phone book under "Art Appraisers," or contact a museum for a referral. Get the appraisal in writing. Depending on the piece and type of artwork, an appraisal may cost several hundred dollars.

  2. Step 2

Ask the appraiser where the best place to showcase the artwork would be.

  3. Step 3

Identify galleries, museums or auction houses that feature this type of artwork. Look online or in the phone book and get referrals.

  4. Step 4

Contact museums and art galleries to see if they are interested in purchasing the piece or if they have clients who are looking for your type of artwork.

  5. Step 5

Decide where to sell the artwork.

  6. Step 6

Get a contract from the dealer or auction house delineating its commission or percentage for arranging the sale.

  7. Step 7

Personally deliver the artwork to the dealer or have the artwork professionally transported.

  8. Step 8

    Wait for your cashier's check.

Tips & Warnings
  • Insure your artwork prior to shipment for the full appraised value.
  • You may be requested to provide proof of ownership such as purchase papers or estate papers identifying the artwork.
  • Never release your artwork to someone you are not familiar with. Make sure the dealer or auction house is reputable.
  • Always insure your artwork, even if you're not selling it.
