Instructions

    • 1

Select a business that can be performed from your home. Almost any product or service you can provide can be done from the convenience of your home.

    • 2

Find an appropriate work area. Adapt a spare bedroom or an area in the garage or other room to be used specifically for your business. (This will be important if you plan on taking the home-office deduction on your taxes.)

    • 3

Set up your office or business area with the appropriate equipment for your business. The list of equipment you will need may include a computer, fax machine, copier, Internet access, old-fashioned typewriter, telephone and dedicated phone line.

    • 4

File the necessary paperwork with the appropriate city or local department for a business license and other business-related permits.

    • 5

Get a resale number from the Franchise Tax Board if you plan on using items in your business that will be re-used and sold in the course of your business so you don't have to pay tax on the items.

    • 6

Establish your business. File for a D.B.A (Doing Business As) with the city or local department handling businesses, and advertise the name according to the regulations to notify the public of your intentions to do business under this name.

    • 7

Advertise your business. Use direct mailings, flyers or publication advertisements to get the word out about your business.

    • 8

Use special promotions such as free samples, discounts to new customers or free, additonal services or products.

    • 9

Identify your customer. List who and what other businesses may be interested in your product and/or services and do a direct mailing.

    • 10

Buy a mailing list from marketing organizations or mailing-list sellers for a direct mailing.

    • 11

Provide quality service and products and maintain good customer relations by filling your customers' needs.

Tips & Warnings

  • Decide if you are the right type of person to work at home. You must be a self-starter, able to meet deadlines without someone constantly reminding you, avoid temptations around the home such as TV and the refrigerator.

  • Make sure your family understands you are working. Do not allow disruptions from family or friends.

  • Set specific times for breaks and lunch.

  • Time has the habit of slipping away when you work at home. Set daily goals of things to be accomplished so as not to lose track of time.
