How to Get On and Off a School Bus Safely

For children who ride buses to school, the greatest danger lies in approaching or leaving the school bus. Children can prevent accidents by learning and practicing basic traffic-safety rules.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Try to get to the bus stop at least a few minutes before the bus is supposed to arrive.

  2. Step 2

    Stand at least three giant steps away from the curb while waiting for the bus.

  3. Step 3

    Wait until the bus has stopped completely, the doors open and the driver says it's OK before you step onto the bus.

  4. Step 4

    Use the handrails to keep yourself from falling when getting off the bus.

  5. Step 5

    Make sure the bus is completely stopped and take at least five giant steps away from the bus along your side of street before crossing in front of a bus.

  6. Step 6

    Never walk behind a bus.

  7. Step 7

    Stay on the sidewalk at least three giant steps away from a bus while walking beside it.

  8. Step 8

    Tell the bus driver before you try to pick up something you dropped next to the bus.
