How to Coach a Ball Handling Drill in Kids' Soccer

There's nothing like a classic one-on-one player confrontation to teach the aspects of ball handling.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Try a one-on-one ladder, with many games taking place simultaneously.

  2. Step 2

Create as many mini-fields as there are pairs of players.

  3. Step 3

Place players in divisions. The winner of the top division stays and the loser moves to the next-lower division. Lower-division winners move up a division.

  4. Step 4

Give points for dribbling over an end line or scoring a goal.

  5. Step 5

Keep games short and intense, just 1 to 2 minutes in length.

  6. Step 6

Emphasize defending. The better the defending in these games, the better the attacking.

  7. Step 7

Spend a bit of time talking about various skills such as dribbling or acceleration. These games are tiring, and a short break to explain things gives the players a rest.

  8. Step 8

Pick players to demonstrate. Kids understand a visual representation more than they do language.

  9. Step 9

Be positive. Keep comments encouraging. Try not to have negative demonstrations, in which players are made to show mistakes.

  10. Step 10

Focus on having a good time.

Tips & Warnings
  • Judge time for this drill by the level of enjoyment. Ten to fifteen minutes is about right.
  • Encourage players to practice on their own.
  • Soccer is a physically demanding sport that could result in serious injury. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
