Throw a Hook in Boxing
Throw a Hook in Boxing

"A great left hook consists of a bunch of precise separate movements that come together and appear as one smooth movement." -Joe Guson, pro boxing trainer

Difficulty: Moderately challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Focus on your open target.

  2. Step 2

Come with your left from the side, assuming you're right-handed.

  3. Step 3

Bring your chin down into the inside of your left shoulder.

  4. Step 4

Pivot your toe, hips and hand in the direction of your punch.

  5. Step 5

Turn your hand over so that at the point of impact, your palm faces down.

  6. Step 6

Connect with your target with four flush knuckles.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do the opposite of these steps if you're left-handed.
  • "The key is to finish flush. You are hooking to get to the side of the head and around your opponent's arms." -Joe Guson

on 2/14/2006 I wouldn't advise on having a clenched fist when throwing this punch, you must keep your palm loose until an inch before contact. If you want to put your weight behind it more, then you can drag up your back foot mildly. Always keep you chin tucked, as the most important thing other than scoring is stopping your opponent landing on you. It is possible to go rounds without taking a single punch if you practice at shadow and covering yourself with your other glove while throwing every punch.

on 11/22/2005 Please note that this move cannot generate any stopping power if you don't use your whole body. It's not just your arm moving, your whole body has to snap in one direction, like a spring. Release all that energy through those two knuckles and onto your opponents ribs (or whatever your aiming at). To properly have power in this move, you need to torque your body a lot. You'll need a strong core.
