"A good boxing gym has that feel of being a working-class place. It ain't pretty, but it gets the job done." -Joe Guson, pro boxing trainer

Difficulty: Moderately challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Open the yellow pages or ask around at local exercise gyms for boxing-specific gyms.

  2. Step 2

Check out the inventory. There should be a decent ring, all the necessary bags, mirrors so you can evaluate your own technique, and room to move and jump rope.

  3. Step 3

Watch the boxers to see if they're moving, working hard, and stoked to be there training.

  4. Step 4

Listen to the energy and take in the vibe. Ask yourself if you could fit in with the crowd.

  5. Step 5

Ask about hours of operation to make sure they fit within your schedule.

  6. Step 6

Find out if the trainer(s) are there all the time.

Tips & Warnings
  • "Find a gym that has the energy to get you fired up to be there. In my gym we pump fast-tempo music to keep the guys moving." -Joe Guson

on 8/5/2008 I also know of a great gym in Houston - it's Lee Canalito's VIP boxing gym (3570 Noah, www.leecanalito.com) - I've been going there for about a year, and I see all kinds of people - people way better than me and people just like me (I was getting out of shape and had never boxed before when I started) and Lee does the things in this article - he's with you the whole time, and its not just sparring - there's also weights, jump rope, hanging bags, and he'll hold hand pads for you and work on technique. I've never stuck with a fitness regimen for so long!!

on 11/22/2005 I know of a gym that produces champions. The coach trains professional boxers, too. It is called Galena Park Boxing Academy and Youth Center, Inc. It is on Clinton Dr. in Galena Park, TX (near Houston). The # is (713) 298-6442 (unless it's changed recently).
