How to Pack for a Road Trip

A good rule to remember when packing for any trip is "less is more."

From Quick Guide: Gas Economical Road Trips
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Select the smallest bag possible to carry the items you need for your trip. If you are going to be doing a lot of walking at your destination, consider using a large backpack as a suitcase.

  2. Step 2

Pack clothes tightly into small plastic bags. Shoes should be placed facing each other heel to toe and wrapped in a separate bag.

  3. Step 3

Place wrapped clothes in the bottom of your bag or suitcase. Throw in an empty bag for future dirty laundry.

  4. Step 4

Pack medicines and first-aid supplies in one bag or compartment and toiletries in another. Put potentially leaky items in sealed plastic bags and buy travel-size versions of your toiletries when possible.

  5. Step 5

Add books and any professional materials or electronic gear you may need.

  6. Step 6

Close and lift the bag to determine if it is too heavy to carry comfortably for several city blocks. If so - and if you're going to be on the move a lot while traveling - remove anything that can be bought, rented or borrowed at your destination.

Tips & Warnings
  • To save room, roll up all your clothes and pack them tightly together.
  • Consider packing outfits (matching tops, pants, sweaters and socks) in individual bags, so you don't have to unpack your entire suitcase each time you dress.
  • Avoid packing valuables in your suitcase; keep them with you in a purse or fanny pack.

on 4/27/2007 Don't use a fanny pack! It draws attention to the fact that you are a tourist and will try to pickpocket you.

on 6/30/2006 Bring towels to put on your lap if eating in the car where spills are inevitable. Also, bring packets of ketchup and salt, in case you forget to ask when you stop at a fast food place.

on 2/28/2006 I create a packing list of everything I put in my bag. When I buy a souvenir I put it on the list. When it is time to pack up to go home I make sure I have every thing on my list!

on 11/22/2005 Since I travel quite a bit, I have a master list of all the possible items I might need (plus more) for the upcoming trips, so as not to forget anything. When I have a trip coming up, all I have to do is follow the list.

on 11/22/2005 I have two kids, one is 11 and the other 15, before a road trip, I like to get them each something small to excite them more into the trip. Ideas include a mini handheld fan, a small bag of candy, a sketchbook, and their favorite snacks.
