How to Fertilize in Cold Weather

Choose a water-soluble fertilizer made from ammonium nitrate. Ammonium nitrate is soluble in cold water and will be carried down to the roots via irrigation.

Mix the fertilizer solution in a watering can according to label directions.

Apply ammonium nitrate fertilizer when the soil is still cold to the touch.

Pour directly into the soil at the base of the plants. Try not to get the foliage wet with the fertilizer solution.

Tips & Warnings
Don't use fertilizers made from ammonium sulfate when the soil is cold - you'll just be wasting your money.
