Relinquish the responsibility of catering to everyone's specific and varied tastes--hire a professional to do the job.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Look in the yellow pages. It's a great resource for food and beverage services.
Step2
Ask your friends and relatives for recommendations. Think about who had a party with a bartender recently. Did they like her? What advice do they have?
Step3
Consult with your favorite local bartender. Request her to work your party or make a recommendation.
Step4
Call bartending schools for advice and referrals.
Step5
Ask your catering company if it offers bartending services. If it doesn't, find out if it has any recommendations.
Step6
Talk to the bartender on the phone or meet her in person if you can. Make sure you find someone who's friendly.
Step7
Determine what and how much alcohol you want to serve. This will determine the skill level the bartender should have and the amount of money you'll spend.
Step8
Make a list of questions, your budget and the type of alcohol you want to serve and share this information with the bartender. Agree on payment before the bartender arrives.
Step9
Let the bartender know what expectations you have before the party starts.
Step10
Remember to give the bartender a tip, along with her fee, at the end of the party.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider hiring a neighborhood college student or relative over the age of 21 if you're planning to serve only beer and wine. Most students or people over that age have had some experience pouring beer and wine. They may drink a couple, but fun will surely be had by all.

on 9/26/2006 Call your local bartending school (even though they will be fresh, your drink will be right) or talk to a bartender at a bar, they will most likely know someone, maybe themselves.

on 11/22/2005 We run a bartending school in Washington DC (http://www.bartending-school.com) and we get lots of requests for bartenders for parties and fulfill many of them. Also, many of our grads work for caterers and banquet halls as bartenders.

If you call our school and are demanding, you will definitely get one of our tested and experienced bartenders. They are very good. They often work regularly for some larger customers and are called back because of their quality. But if you aren't demanding, you may get a newer, greener, less tested person. (They have to get started somewhere). Frankly, many of the bartenders working for caterers could be fresh bartending school graduates at their first job.

A great source, of course, is from a friend, acquaintance or host who had a good bartender. Get that person's name from a host who had a good experience with a bartender.
