As leader, invite birders who have equal or less expertise than you, and stay in front of the group.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Decide on the time and place to meet, the duration of the walk, and whether it will be canceled if it rains.

  2. Step 2

Advertise the walk through your local bird group or by placing a notice in the local newspaper.

  3. Step 3

Thoroughly scout the area of the bird walk a few days before you lead the group.

  4. Step 4

Make mental notes about the species you can expect and their locations.

  5. Step 5

Look for nests or other sights of interest to the group.

  6. Step 6

Arrive at least 5 minutes early on the day of the walk.

  7. Step 7

Introduce yourself to the participants and, if it is a small group, have the participants introduce themselves.

  8. Step 8

Be conscious of the pace of the group as you walk, and don't get too far ahead of stragglers.

  9. Step 9

Remain in place when you spot a bird until everyone in the group has seen it.

  10. Step 10

    Finish the walk on time.

Tips & Warnings
  • Check to be sure that you will not be legally liable if someone is injured while birding with you.

on 3/30/2006 Leaders should be patient with beginners, identify all birds that the group sees, and -- if they can -- explain that identification if there are questions from other birders. Not all leaders will be experts, and I heartily disagree that they should only invite those who have the same or less experience than themselves! Better birders help those who are with them learn and enjoy this hobby!
