Things You'll Need:
- Walking Shoes
- Binoculars
- Binoculars
- Spotting Scopes (optional)

Step 1
Decide on the time and place to meet, the duration of the walk, and whether it will be canceled if it rains.

Advertise the walk through your local bird group or by placing a notice in the local newspaper.

Thoroughly scout the area of the bird walk a few days before you lead the group.

Make mental notes about the species you can expect and their locations.

Step 5
Look for nests or other sights of interest to the group.

Step 6
Arrive at least 5 minutes early on the day of the walk.

Step 7
Introduce yourself to the participants and, if it is a small group, have the participants introduce themselves.

Step 8
Be conscious of the pace of the group as you walk, and don't get too far ahead of stragglers.

Step 9
Remain in place when you spot a bird until everyone in the group has seen it.

Step 10
Finish the walk on time.

on 3/30/2006 Leaders should be patient with beginners, identify all birds that the group sees, and -- if they can -- explain that identification if there are questions from other birders. Not all leaders will be experts, and I heartily disagree that they should only invite those who have the same or less experience than themselves! Better birders help those who are with them learn and enjoy this hobby!
