How to Start a Student Political Group

Political activism is becoming more and more popular on college campuses across the country. If you have a passion for a particular political issue, get organized on campus, and you can make a real difference.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Decide on the political cause that your group will represent.

  2. Step 2

    Form a small group of people who share your political interest. Look for members among your friends, classmates and people in your residence hall.

  3. Step 3

    Contact your school administration and find out how to register a student group. This work may involve writing a constitution, filling out some paperwork or attending one or more orientation meetings.

  4. Step 4

    Contact local politicians and organizations that sympathize with your cause. Tell them you're forming a student activist group and ask if you can have some flyers, pamphlets or other materials to distribute on campus.

  5. Step 5

    Publicize your group with flyers, information tables, e-mail notices and other methods.

  6. Step 6

    Hold regular meetings and events to address the cause your group represents.

  • Be prepared for some flakiness among your group's members. They may not all share your level of commitment.
