Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Trace or draw a handprint or other shape on a manila folder and cut it out.

  2. Step 2

Cut two pieces of light-colored vellum paper 1/8 inch smaller than the dimensions of a blank greeting card.

  3. Step 3

Cut a window in the front of the blank greeting card. The window can be any shape as long as it will accommodate the outline you drew on the manila folder.

  4. Step 4

Leave at least 3/4 inch of the card borders uncut.

  5. Step 5

Fasten one piece of vellum inside the card with craft glue to cover the window.

  6. Step 6

Use just a dab of glue to stick the manila cutout to the other piece of vellum.

  7. Step 7

Apply a thin layer of glue around the edges of the first piece of vellum and stick the second one to it, sandwiching the manila cutout between them. Be sure not to get glue on the areas of vellum that show through the window.

  8. Step 8

Write an appropriate Mother's Day greeting inside the card with a calligraphy pen or a gold gel pen.

  9. Step 9

Hold the open card up to the light and see the silhouette!

Tips & Warnings
  • Experiment with textured and different colors of vellum for some interesting effects.
  • Hearts, butterflies, angels and children's silhouettes (see Related eHows) make good cut-outs as well. Check clip art books for ideas. You can also use die cuts made for scrapbooking.
