Cornices have a tendency to crumble and fall so only venture on to them with utmost caution. Many times skiing you'll have no choice but drop off a cornice in order to enter a run.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Approach the cornice at an angle. If it appears to be overhanging quite a bit, stay clear of the cornice.

  2. Step 2

Check to see that the landing is decent and absent of rocks, stumps or trees.

  3. Step 3

Determine if the landing is steep enough for the size of cornice you're planning to hit. The taller the cornice, th steeper landing you'll want.

  4. Step 4

Drop off the cornice at an angle.

  5. Step 5

Keep a tucked position if you become airborn.

  6. Step 6

Try to keep your ski on the snow surface.

  7. Step 7

Exten your legs to meet the bottom of the drop.

Tips & Warnings
  • If avalanche debris or any type of fracture line appears visible, do not step on to the cornice.
  • Practice on small cornices and gradually work up to bigger ones.
