How to Traverse on Skis

Traversing on skis is easy if you have a definite destination and you maintain your speed.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Downhill Ski Boots
  • Downhill Ski Poles
  • Downhill Skis
  • Ski Clothing
  • Ski Helmets
  1. Step 1

Choose your end point before traversing. Perhaps you need to zip across a flat section, or you want to access a different chute.

  2. Step 2

Stay high on the hill - the higher the better. At some point while you traverse, you may want to pick up speed. You can achieve this by dropping down in elevation.

  3. Step 3

Maintain speed. Traversing takes place typically when you need to go laterally rather than down. By keeping a decent rate of speed, you can slide to where you're going instead of pushing or walking there.

  4. Step 4

Attain an aerodynamic position when you need to traverse across flats. Some skiers believe in the racer's tuck, while others settle for ducking their hands behind their backs and leaning forward.

  5. Step 5

Stay on the highest and most direct line when traversing across a steep-pitched section.

  6. Step 6

Use your poles when needed to propel yourself forward.

  7. Step 7

Skate or sidestep when you lose momentum (see Related eHows). Skating is more effective for flats, and sideslipping or shuffling will assist you better on steeper slopes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Speed is your friend when you encounter a traversing situation.
  • A good wax job on your ski bases makes traversing much easier.
  • Skiing is a physically demanding sport that could result in serious injury. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
