How to Descend Stairs When Wearing Ski Boots

Walking down stairs in ski boots is a difficult endeavor, since the boots' design locks your ankles in place. Make your a descent a graceful one by following this advice.

Things You'll Need:

  • Ski Boots
  • Ski Clothing
  • Ski Poles
  • Skis
  1. Step 1

    Loosen the buckles of your boots to increase mobility for your feet.

  2. Step 2

    Use the handrail. This may seem obvious, yet amazingly, it is overlooked at ski resorts across the country.

  3. Step 3

    Step down, leading with the heel of your foot.

  4. Step 4

    Place only the back half of your foot on the stair.

  5. Step 5

    Allow the front part of your foot to hang off the edge of the stair.

  6. Step 6

    Slide your foot off the step to the stair below it.

  7. Step 7

    Continue this step-sliding process until you reach the bottom of the stairs.

  8. Step 8

    Take your time. The bases of ski resorts are all hustle and bustle, especially on the weekends, but keep in mind that ski boots are not designed for walking.

  • Most stairs at ski resorts have textured grates to prevent slipping. These grates make the sliding maneuver beneficial because you can maintain contact with the stairs more easily.
