West Coast snow carries the glorified and picturesque names of "Sierra cement" and "Cascade concrete." On telemark skis, it's easy to fall flat on your face while skiing this pseudo-wet-sidewalk snow.

Difficulty: Moderately challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ski Clothing
  • Telemark Ski Equipment
  1. Step 1

Start by gaining some speed in the thick stuff and then turning right.

  2. Step 2

Drop your right knee and then focus on putting as much weight as you can on the right, bent leg.

  3. Step 3

Sink low into the turn by flexing your ankles, knees and hips down toward the snow. Sink your body lower than you would in other snow conditions.

  4. Step 4

Rise up out of the turn and then drop your left knee down to start a left turn. Remember to put as much weight as possible on your left, bent leg.

  5. Step 5

Lean back slightly if the snow is extra-soupy. Think about getting really low to the ground, weighting your back leg and then surfing the snow with your front, lead ski.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you plan on skiing wet powder frequently, think about getting a wide pair of telemark skis to give you added flotation capacity.
  • Skiing is a physically demanding sport that could result in serious injury. We recommend that you seek the proper training and equipment before undertaking this activity.
