Sometimes the only way to get up a steep hill on telemark skis is to sidestep.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ski Clothing
  • Telemark Ski Equipment
  1. Step 1

Point both skis across the hill, perpendicular to the slope. In this stance, one ski will be farther up the hill than the other.

  2. Step 2

Plant your uphill pole above you into the snow.

  3. Step 3

    Bend sideways at the hips.

  4. Step 4

Lean into the hill, using your pole as a balance aid.

  5. Step 5

Lift your uphill foot toward your pole, maintaining a perpendicular stance to the slope.

  6. Step 6

Plant this foot and shift your weight onto it.

  7. Step 7

Lift your lower foot up and plant it so that your feet are side by side again.

  8. Step 8

Plant your uphill pole above you and repeat until you reach the top of the incline.

Tips & Warnings
  • The leg that's farther uphill will tire more quickly than the lower leg. When this happens, turn and face the opposite direction, switching leg positions.
  • Telemark skiing is a physically demanding sport that could result in serious injury. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
