How to Mono Telemark Ski

Use this exercise to practice steering both feet into telemark turns.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ski Clothing
  • Telemark Ski Equipment
  1. Step 1

    Find a groomed slope to ski.

  2. Step 2

    Start in the telemark stance with your right knee dropped, making your left leg the lead leg.

  3. Step 3

    Remember to keep a tight stance - drop your back foot only about 1 1/2 feet from your front foot, and keep equal weight on both skis.

  4. Step 4

    Bend slightly forward with both knees and ankles.

  5. Step 5

    Freeze in this position.

  6. Step 6

    Steer your feet to the right, making a right telemark turn.

  7. Step 7

    Finish the right turn and get ready to switch directions.

  8. Step 8

    Remain in the same stance and steer both feet to the left, making a left turn.

  9. Step 9

    Repeat this until you feel comfortable, then drop your left knee, freeze in this position and try turning both directions again.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you're an alpine skier learning to telemark ski, this is a great practice exercise. It will show you how to steer into turns instead of weighting into them as you would on alpine skis.
  • Telemark skiing is a physically demanding sport that could result in serious injury. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
