The loop shot is an aggressive variation on the block shot. The backhand loop is much more difficult than the forehand, but once effectively mastered, it can be a very useful weapon.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Athletic Gear
  • Table Tennis Balls
  • Table Tennis Nets
  • Table Tennis Paddles
  • Table Tennis Playing Tables
  • Table Tennis Video
  1. Step 1

Take a square stance to the table, bending your knees so that you are almost in a sitting position.

  2. Step 2

Backswing low and across your body, so that the paddle is down by your non-paddle-side's kneecap.

  3. Step 3

Swing from your forearm as the ball nears the apex of its bounce.

  4. Step 4

Hit the ball with a very closed paddle (facing down) at the apex of the ball's bounce, or just after it. The swing motion is nearly vertical, with a curving "loop" at the end.

  5. Step 5

Follow through with an upward motion and recover quickly to your ready position.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice the motion for a while without the ball. Once you're actually playing, you won't have time to think in terms of step-by-step motions.
  • Learn the forehand loop before you try it backhand.
