How to Toast Nuts

By eHow Contributing Writer

There are two ways to toast nuts - in the oven or in a skillet. Both methods work on the same principle: Use high heat and short cooking times to gently toast the outside of the nut and bring out its best flavor.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Nuts
  1. Step 1

Make sure nuts are shelled and of uniform size.

  2. Step 2

Spread nuts in a single layer on a baking pan (one with walls is best) for toasting in the oven. Cook at 400 degrees F for 7 to 10 minutes or until the nuts start to turn golden. Shake the pan halfway through toasting.

  3. Step 3

Place nuts in a single layer for toasting in a skillet. With the skillet over medium-high heat, stir or shake the nuts continually for 5 to 7 minutes or until they start to turn golden.

  4. Step 4

Remove them from the cooking pan as soon as they're done.

Tips & Warnings
  • Toasted nuts have a deeper, more concentrated flavor than raw nuts.
  • Cook the nuts only until they start to turn golden and parts of them still appear raw; they should smell toasty, though. Don't let them get any darker than light-brown or they won't taste good.
  • Just about any edible nut can be toasted, including peanuts, hazelnuts (also called filberts) walnuts, macadamias and almonds.
  • Nuts have high concentrations of natural oil, so it is not necessary to add oil when toasting nuts.

on 1/26/2007 Thankyou for posting this How To. I want to start learning how to cook and have been watching cooking shows; they never explain how to toast nuts, but some of the shows will tell you to add toasted nuts. Thanks for the easy to understand explanation :)

on 2/12/2007 I toast nuts on my gas stovetop in a small, non-stick pan, watching the heat carefully and stirring constantly. I find this easier and faster than using the oven method.

on 11/22/2005 This is kind of silly, but I know people who do it. Place a small amount of nuts in the oven. After about 5 minutes, add the rest of the nuts, but do not blend them with the others. When you smell burning nuts, the second batch will be perfect.
