when it comes to makeup, mascara is one of the most popular beauty products on the market. Mascara defines and brings color to the lashes, and highlights and dramatizes eyes. Different formulas can enhance your lashes in different ways. Follow these cosmetic tips to get the eye-enhancing lowdown on applying mascara.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Consider the types of mascara and select one appropriate for your lashes and the occasion. You have a choice of lengthening, thickening, long-wearing, conditioning and waterproof formulas, among others. For day, you might decide to add length, while a night on the town may require a long-wearing or thickening formula.
Step2
Select a color. If you have blond or red lashes, opt for brown mascara. Darker-lashed women can consider brown for a casual look, and black or brown-black for more pronounced or dramatic lashes.
Step3
Curl your lashes with an eyelash curler, if desired, and apply all other eye makeup prior to your mascara.
Step4
Remove the wand from the tube in one pull. Pumping the mascara will push air into the tube, potentially drying out the formula and introducing bacteria into it.
Step5
Begin with the underside of your upper lashes, moving the brush slowly upward toward the tips of your lashes. Always hold the wand parallel to your eyelid. Roll the brush slowly on the upward stroke to promote separation of the lashes.
Step6
Allow the first coat of mascara to dry before applying the second coat in the same manner.
Step7
Use an eyelash comb to separate the wet lashes. Also blot the lashes with tissue paper if necessary to remove excess mascara.
Step8
Use less mascara for the lower lashes. Begin where the lashes meet the rim of the lower eyelid, and gently stroke downward.
Step9
Remove any stray mascara around the eye with a cotton swab dipped in a small amount of eye makeup remover.

Tips & Warnings

  • Contact lens wearers should stick to waterproof mascara formulas, as they break down more slowly, minimizing the chance of any flakes getting into the eyes.
  • Always remove eye makeup thoroughly before going to bed. This will keep lashes healthier and prevent any mascara from getting into your eyes during the night.
  • Apply mascara after eye shadow and eyeliner.

on 6/30/2006 Almond oil makes a great eye makeup remover, it even removes waterproof mascara without having to pull on the eyelid. If you use it with a soft baby wipe, removing all your eye makeup is fast and easy on the eyelids. Sometimes you might need to apply the almond oil 2 times to get all the waterproof mascara off, but even so you will not need to pull or tug. It shouldn't bother or sting your eyes at all (it leaves my eyes as cool as if I had only used water), but if it does bother your eyes, just passing the soft baby wipe over them will take away any problems.

on 8/8/2006 If you get some mascara on your skin, try to wipe it off with a dry finger or fingernail first. This usually works, and eyelashes just clump together if you lick your finger and accidentally touch them, which looks really bad and is annoying to fix.
To separate eyelashes, hold the brush on base of eyelashes horizontally. Then jiggle it side to side a little bit before stroking upward.
If you don't need to use waterproof mascara, water soluble is much easier to clean up.
While cleaning off mascara, wet your fingers and pinch it off in the same direction you put it on. This prevents it from getting into your eyes too much.

on 1/25/2006 To remove heavy eye makeup, such as black eyeliner and mascara, use baby wipes. They're cheaper and more effective!
Hold the baby wipe on either side of the lashes and then gently rub your fingers together, as if you're about to click your fingers. You may have to wipe your eyes gently after this. The mascara and eyeliner will come off more easily than with eye makeup remover. I've found that this tip doesn't work as well for waterproof mascara. Try using baby wipes for sensitive skin, however, as others may cause irritation.

on 11/22/2005 My sister (who currently is a makeup artist) has told me that before you apply mascara, brush some loose powder over your lashes as a primer and it stops clumping. When you want more of a smokey look, apply loose powder then the mascara, wait for the mascara to dry a bit, then apply more loose powder then another coat of mascara. This really helps mascara stay put, and doesn't clump at all. Just make sure you're using a good quality mascara. Yves Saint Laurent is good.

on 11/22/2005 Brush a little powder to your lashes before you apply mascara. It makes the lashes look very full and long and the mascara clings to your lashes more.
