Hit a Block Shot in Badminton

When your offense suddenly turns to defense, use the block to defend your court, without giving up your offensive position.

From Quick Guide: Badminton for Beginners
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Use the block shot when you are in the forward half of your court.

  2. Step 2

Hold your racquet up in your ready position, about head high.

  3. Step 3

Keep the racquet face open and square to the net.

  4. Step 4

Watch the shuttle carefully, as your opponent returns a shot.

  5. Step 5

Move your racquet head quickly into the path of the shuttle.

  6. Step 6

Block the shuttle without swinging the racquet at all. If you are very close to the net, or your opponent's return is high enough, block the shuttle with a closed racquet face to drive it down into your opponent's court.

  7. Step 7

Recover quickly to your ready position.

Tips & Warnings
  • The block shot is a situational shot - use it while you are in the front court to keep the shuttle on your opponent's side of the net, instead of working towards it.
  • The block is a good defense against the smash, as long as your hands are fast enough.
