One of the most common hits in badminton is the drive shot, which drives the shuttle parallel to the ground and close to the net.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Take short steps to position yourself, and step forward with your non-racquet foot as you are about to hit the shuttle.

  2. Step 2

Turn your non-racquet shoulder to face your target as you draw your racquet back.

  3. Step 3

Bend your elbow and cock your wrist back in preparation for the shot.

  4. Step 4

Drive off your back foot as you uncoil your body.

  5. Step 5

Swing your arm forward, straightening your elbow and pushing the racquet through the shuttle. Swing on a flat plane, with no upward motion.

  6. Step 6

Strike the shuttle when it's about a foot or two in front of your body.

  7. Step 7

Snap your wrist as the racquet strikes the shuttle. Hit with a vertical racquet face to drive the shuttle forward on a flat trajectory, just over the top of the net.

  8. Step 8

Follow through in line with the flight of the shuttle.

  9. Step 9

Land with your weight on your front foot.

  10. Step 10

Recover quickly to your ready position.

Tips & Warnings
  • Hit the shuttle before it loses speed.
  • Aim your shot for open court space, between your opponents in doubles, and to the opposite side of the court in singles.
  • Always hit the shuttle when it is out in front of you, not past your body.

on 12/9/2005 The shuttle should barely clear the net with less than 15cm between it and the net. Bending the knees before performing the drive shot may make it easier, as there is more room for a swing.
