How to Hit an Underhand Drop Shot in Badminton

Catch the shuttle late and low, barely hitting it so that it just clears the net - it should land too short for your opponent to get to. This is particularly useful when your opponent is expecting a deep clear.

Instructions

    • 1

Lunge forward with your racquet foot to reach the shuttle. Reach it as soon as possible, before it falls too low. Net height is ideal.

    • 2

Hold you racket arm out with your racket extended and level with the net.

    • 3

Slide the racket sideways as you make contact to give the shuttle some slice, causing it tumble over the net. This shot is very hard to return.

    • 4

Contact the shuttle with very little wrist action and no follow-through.

    • 5

Keep your racket face open, allowing the shuttle to simply bounce off your strings and barely clear the net.

    • 6

Aim for the sideline furthest from your opponent's position.

    • 7

Recover quickly to your ready position.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are further from the net, a slight wrist snap may be necessary to clear the net. If you are very close to the net, you may want to withdraw slightly as your racquet makes contact.

  • Try this shot either forehand or backhand.

Make sure your hand is higher than your racquet face so that the shuttle is bouncing outward from the center of the court. Your opponent will need an extra step to return your hit. You can also perform a "dump" with your racquet face going down with the shuttle and let it bounce over the net. The advantage of a dump is that you can delay the drop, turn the angle of the racquet face and slap the shuttle to hit a cross-court net shot just before the shuttle hit the ground or hit a hair-pin shot, depending on your opponent's reaction.
