How to Put a Cast Member on the Stage in Director

Each individual item that you use in Macromedia Director is called a Cast Member (pictures, sounds, scripts, transitions and so on). Cast Members are stored in the Cast window. To use a Cast Member in a movie, you have to place it on the Stage. The Stage is the viewing area - the actual "stage" that your users will see when they play the movie. These instructions apply to Macromedia Director 5.0. Procedures for other versions may vary.

Things You'll Need:

  • Macromedia Director

    Dragging Directly on the Stage

  1. Step 1

    Open or create a movie in Macromedia Director.

  2. Step 2

    Place a Cast Member in the Cast window.

  3. Step 3

    Move to the frame where you want it to be used.

  4. Step 4

    Select the Cast Member by clicking on its location in the Cast window, then drag that Cast Member to the Stage.

  5. Step 5

    Position your Cast Member on the Stage as desired.

  6. Dragging to the Score

  7. Step 1

    Open the Score window.

  8. Step 2

    Locate the frame where you want the Cast Member to appear.

  9. Step 3

    Locate the channel (the small, numbered squares that appear in each frame) where you want to place the sprite.

  10. Step 4

    Select the Cast Member by clicking on its location in the Cast window.

  11. Step 5

    Drag the Cast Member to the channel and the frame that you've chosen. The sprite appears in the Score. If it's visual (text, video or image) it will also appear on the Stage.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can select more than one Cast Member in the Cast window by using Shift+Click or Control+Click (Windows) or Shift-Click or Command-Click (Mac).
