Whether you're seeking the giant robot series you watched as a child or the latest anime import, a few simple guidelines will help you succeed.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check your public library. A good library tends to stock titles that appeal to its patrons, and you can't beat the price.

  2. Step 2

Browse local book and video stores. Anime has become so popular that smart retailers stock the more popular titles and will order other titles for you.

  3. Step 3

Visit on-line stores for a wider selection. A general retailer may feature lower prices, while an anime specialist may have more obscure and imported titles.

  4. Step 4

Search on-line auction sites. They usually have a wide selection, often at excellent prices.

  5. Step 5

Trade with other members in an anime club. You can also get tips on which retailers offer the best prices, service and selection.

  6. Step 6

Inquire at your favorite Internet discussion board. Networking with other fans taps into a wealth of knowledge and experience.

  7. Step 7

Visit an anime convention, such as Otakon or Anime Expo. Conventions are great places to pick up the rarest, the newest and everything in-between.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your library has a video section, request an anime title. If it isn't terribly risque, they may surprise you by ordering it.
  • You can sample before purchasing by renting first, either locally or on-line.
  • Some titles may be available on video tape if they aren't available on DVD, and vice versa. A region-free DVD player will give you a little more leeway in your DVD purchases.
  • Watch out for pirated, counterfeit, bootleg or unlicensed goods, especially when purchasing via on-line auctions.
  • If in doubt about authenticity, ask the seller to provide specific details, such as the exact title, ISBN/ASIN, audio tracks, subtitles, region code, aspect ratio and video format.
