Snakes: just hearing the word makes people cringe. Benign species such as gopher, grass and garter snakes benefit the garden by eating destructive rodents. The beautiful king snake will actually kill and eat rattle snakes. If you just can't abide the idea of having snake in your yard, here are some ways to keep them out.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Wire Cutters
  • fine wire mesh

Step1
Eliminate habitat. Snakes require heat to digest their food. Dry, rocky locations are havens to most kinds of snakes. Be aware when walking near wood piles and large, flat areas of concrete.
Step2
Remove hiding places. Snakes are shy creatures. When not hunting, snakes will hide in wood piles, among flower pots and under garden debris.
Step3
Keep rodents under control. A hungry snake searching for food will follow its stomach. To control rodents keep pet food indoors, garbage cans tightly sealed and vegetable gardens harvested.
Step4
Erect snake proof fencing around your garden. A low fence only 2 to 3 feet high and made of fine wire mesh will prevent snakes from entering.

Tips & Warnings

  • Commercial snake repellants have been proven to be useless.
  • Call in professional animal control firms or your local animal control office to remove unwanted snakes from your property.
  • Do not handle snakes unless you know exactly what variety you are dealing with. Even baby rattlesnakes are extremely dangerous.

on 3/9/2007 This is for getting rid of snakes . i'm from South Carolina and I live in Atlanta , Ga now . Growing up in a farming family , it is a Southern custom to use lime . Lime irritates and eats away at a snakes or any retiles skin , so they stay miles away from it ( smile ) . You can buy bags of lime at any feed and seed store , your local wal-mart , home depot , or lowes . We in the South have always sprinkled lime under our houses, yards, and gardens . Its a proven scientific method , and its not harmful to humans at all ! Good luck .

on 2/16/2007 We spray our entire property line with diesel, it tends to keep the snakes at bay. However, not forever (unfortunately)!

on 8/8/2006 Run them over with your lawnmower!
This keeps the population under control for sure! I hate snakes - I do not want some attempt to control them. I want them dead.

on 8/8/2006 Along with a generous sprinkling of mothballs, we were told to sprinkle course sand in our basement. Snakes have a very sensitive underbelly and the sand really irritates them. We have not seen a snake in the house for years now! For the outside we use Snakeaway. It works very well in our environment.
