It's getting hard to see around the traffic in front of you these days if you're driving a lowly car behind a sport utility vehicle (SUV). Many people are starting to feel that if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Consider four-wheel drive only if you plan to go off road. Most studies show that less than 10 percent of SUV owners ever take their vehicles off road. Four-wheel drive is more expensive, lowers your gas mileage and requires more maintenance.

  2. Step 2

Be sure to do your homework if you do want four-wheel drive. There are many different designs out there, and they all have their advantages and disadvantages.

  3. Step 3

Look for cargo capacity. How easy is it to fold the rear seats forward? How easy is it to lift items into the cargo area?

  4. Step 4

Consider safety. Check the latest crash tests.

  5. Step 5

Examine the horsepower. If you plan to do any towing, you'll want the bigger engine.

  6. Step 6

Consider gas mileage. Some SUVs are more fuel efficient than others.

  7. Step 7

Look at the SUV's handling. Do you feel like you could maneuver the vehicle in an emergency situation? In the parking lot?

  8. Step 8

Consider resale value - it may vary more than you think. Check Kelley Blue Book values.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider a station wagon. You'll get the same cargo capacity, better handling and a more fuel-efficient vehicle.
  • SUVs are bigger but not necessarily safer. They don't corner as well as cars and don't handle as well in sudden, tight-maneuvering situations.
