Millions of people nationwide now follow NASCAR. When it was a regional sport, a fan could often meet and chat with all the drivers. Today that's rare. "The best way to support your driver is to join a fan club, visit an Internet site, and let sponsors know how much you appreciate their involvement with your favorite driver," says Johnny Benson, driver of the #10 Tyler Jet Motorsports Lycos Pontiac.

Tips & Warnings

  • Johnny Benson notes that drivers are especially appreciative of fans who are both sincere and realistic in their support. "A few letters of encouragement are also welcome," he says.
  • Be patient with your driver. The pressure is intense. Every driver in this business has something to prove to the team, the owner, the sponsor, fellow drivers and fans, according to Johnny Benson.
  • Driving a race car at speeds approaching 200 mph requires maximum concentration. Be patient with your favorite driver if you meet in the pit area and the driver seems distant or distracted. No doubt the driver is focused on the race.
  • Unmuffled racing engines are loud. Ear protection is a good idea for everyone in a racing environment.
