How to Apply an Adhesive Traction Pad to Your Shortboard

"The first time I ever put on a traction pad, I was in a hurry to get into the water. I put it on crooked, so it wrapped around the rail - I had to peel it off and reapply it three times!" says Timmy Reyes, O'Neill Surf Team rider.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy a pad with some arch support and a rise on the back to give you something to push against.

    • 2

Remove any wax, salt or sand from your board.

    • 3

Clean the board with a wet rag, or with a rag dampened with acetone, and let it dry.

    • 4

Determine the ideal location for your traction pad by placing it on the board without peeling off the adhesive covering.

    • 5

Peel off the covering once you're comfortable with where the pad will go.

    • 6

Press the pad onto the board and push the pad down with your thumbs, making sure to run over all of the edges.

    • 7

Allow at least 1 hour for the adhesive to take hold before going into the water.

Tips & Warnings

  • "I've seen people put their traction pads on so that they cover their leash plug. It's always best to take your time and do it right," says Timmy.

  • Tail pads are best placed on the deck of your board directly above your fins.

  • Traction pads can rub skin off your knees if you surf without a full wet suit.

After preparing your board for the pad, place the pad over the "tri fins" or above the middle fin, and inbetween the other two fins. Also, when you surf, look to see where your back foot is and place it in the area with the pad.
