"My Dad surfs, too, so I don't really have the problem of explaining surf stoke to my parents," says Timmy Reyes, O'Neill Surf Team rider. Here are some tips in case you're not so lucky.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Be an all-around good kid. Study, do your chores, don't beat up on your brother, don't party hard (or at least don't get caught).
Step2
Take them to the beach with you so they are familiar with what surfing is all about. Note: Do this infrequently if you're worried they'll cramp your style.
Step3
Explain the healthy aspects of the sport such as camaraderie, appreciation and respect for nature, physical fitness, mental challenges, etc.
Step4
Show them pictures and articles that demonstrate the beautiful, healthy side of surfing rather than the negative stereotypes.
Step5
Share with them your stoke. If you're happy, they'll be happy.

Tips & Warnings

  • "Being sponsored, I'm getting paid to do what I love. My parents are cool with that," says O'Neill Surf Team rider Timmy Reyes.
  • Maintain a healthy balance between surfing and the rest of your life and your parents won't worry so much.
