Step1
Be in good shape so that you will have confidence in your physical ability.
Step2
Have the right surfboard and leash for the surf conditions so that you have confidence in your equipment.
Step3
Take time to stretch before you go out.
Step4
Evaluate the break and know its ins and outs.
Step5
Visualize paddling into the wave, dropping in, and surfing down the line.
Step6
Listen to your instinct.
Step7
Know your limitations and respect them.

  • "There is that little voice in the back of your head that messes with you. You have to know when to listen to it and when to ignore it," Reyes says.
