Instructions

    • 1

Be good. Interpret this command how you may. Practice and strive to keep your basketball skills exceptional ' to the point where people begin to notice. Yet also, be good to the sport: A positive attitude is addictive and contagious.

    • 2

Call colleges and universities and ask for information cards. Fill these out and send them back. These will tell the schools who you are and what you're looking for.

    • 3

Write letters to coaches. Tell them why you want to play for them.

    • 4

Videotape your high school games and send them to your target schools.

    • 5

Contact recruiters and invite them to your games. Once they arrive, introduce yourself.

    • 6

Ask your high school coach for a recommendation. Request that he or she contact the college coach.

    • 7

Be willing to play at a small-division school across the country if that's what it takes.

    • 8

Walk on the college team and work your butt off. (Watch "Rudy" for reference. Yeah, it's about Notre Dame football, but it will motivate you accordingly.)

Tips & Warnings

  • Find the college coach's house and practice on his or her driveway hoop.

  • Don't pester coaches too much. Read the signs and know the point where "eager" turns into "annoying."

No matter how good you are, no school is going to waste their time with you if your grades are not good. Schools do not take risks and give students scholarships if they feel they may fail their classes. The country is filled with great basketball players who never made it to college because they did not pay attention to their grades. Make it easy on the recruiter, practice hard and show them you can make it at their school!
