When it comes to theft in the workplace an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Here is how to keep employee theft from happening.

Make sure you have a strong, clear policy in place regarding company property, and that employees know about it. If you do not tell them your policies than they can use this to dispute you in the case of being accused of theft.

Retain the right to inspect desks, lockers and other company property. You can not look through an employees belongings without reasonable suspicion.

Call the authorities if there's a need to investigate private property, such as purses, briefcases and automobiles. Be aware that the authorities will need a search warrant.

Provide employees with a secure place to store their own personal belongings, such as locking file cabinets and desks. Lockers are also a great way to protect your employees belongings.

Be wary of invading your employees' privacy. It's one thing to search company property, another to search purses, cars and other private belongings. Inappropriate searches increase the possibility of lawsuits and destroy company morale.
