New York City is the bomb from heaven and hell. So much to do, so much money. A little resourcefulness goes a long way.

  1. Step 1

    Fly into JFK, La Guardia or Newark and take a cab into town for $35, including toll.

  2. Step 2

    Bring your walking shoes and a warm jacket. Spring can be gloriously sunny and still have a chill in the air.

  3. Step 3

    Go see a Knicks game at the famous Madison Square Garden.

  4. Step 4

    Pick from a plethora of musicals playing on Broadway for a theater fix.

  5. Step 5

    Tour the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and ponder some of the greatest works in the world.

  6. Step 6

    Hang out in Central Park for amusing people-watching.

  7. Step 7

    Ferry from the Battery across the Hudson to the Statue of Liberty.

  8. Step 8

    Eat out in such wonderful districts as Greenwich Village, Little Italy, SoHo and Chinatown.

  9. Step 9

    Bang your head or your bootie at a Radio City Music Hall concert.

Tips & Warnings
  • Call a friend or seek out a hostel to save money on accommodations. If you have to, stay in a cheap hotel across the river and ride the subway into Manhattan.
  • Take the subway everywhere. It's efficient, affordable and safe.
  • Crime is in every big city, so avoid sketchy, dark places and travel with a friend.

on 11/22/2005 Consider staying at a YMCA hotel. Although the rooms are small and you have to share a bathroom, it may be worth the money you save. Rooms run about $28/night.
