A financial planner will help you to maximize your money and chose investments that will allow you to attain your financial goals.

  1. Step 1

    Look up "Financial Planner" in yellow pages.

  2. Step 2

    Search the internet for "Financial Planners."

  3. Step 3

    Contact the National Association of Financial Planners for a referral.

  4. Step 4

    Check with friends and business associates for referrals.

  5. Step 5

    Identify the proper financial planner with the initials, C.F.P. (Certified Financial Planner.)

  6. Step 6

    Ask the potential financial planner how much they charge, if they work on a fee-only basis or a percentage of your assets that they manage.

  7. Step 7

    Provide planner with a list of financial obligations for the short and long term, such as college or retirement.

  8. Step 8

    Collect all your pertinent documents including a list of assets and liabilities and a written list of your financial goals for the short and long term goals.

  • Talk to several planners before selecting one. Make sure you and your planner have the same goals for your future in mind.
  • Be honest with your planner. It will help you to get the most out of his or her services.
  • Get referrals.
