A good defensive shot against the smash shot or the topspin drive, the lob shot provides extra airtime so that you can get back into position. It can also throw off your opponent's timing.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Athletic Gear
  • Table Tennis Balls
  • Table Tennis Nets
  • Table Tennis Paddles
  • Table Tennis Playing Tables
  • Table Tennis Video
  1. Step 1

Use the lob when you are on the defensive to get some extra time to get into position or to slow the pace of the game. Watch out, though - the lob can set your opponent up for a smash.

  2. Step 2

Notice the hard attack coming from your opponent, and take a step or two back from the table.

  3. Step 3

Hold the paddle low and open as you draw it either back or across your chest - the lob shot can be done either forehand or backhand.

  4. Step 4

Bend your knees to get down low on the ball.

  5. Step 5

Swing upward on the ball as it is dropping.

  6. Step 6

Swivel the paddle face from an open (facing up) to a closed (facing down) face as you strike the ball, giving the ball as much topspin as possible.

  7. Step 7

Follow through high, almost above your head.

  8. Step 8

Recover quickly to a good ready stance for your opponent's return.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice the low upward swing and wrist swivel of the lob shot without the ball. In an actual game situation you won't have time to think in terms of step-by-step motions.
  • The lob is a finesse shot. Shoot it as high as you can and still have it land on your opponents side of the table. Hit properly, it will take a low fast bounce when it lands, which usually throws your opponent's timing off.
  • Be careful not to hit the roof or overhead lighting, as these obstacles are considered part of the playing court.
