Tips & Warnings
Many small businesses use financial software packages to manage their finances, particularly balancing ledgers and tax preparation. It's worth the investment to learn one or more of the more popular titles such as Peachtree or Quicken.
Since many bookkeepers are called upon to notarize financial documents, becoming a notary public is an asset.

and earning your degree for accounting from university of phoenix is not a very good idea, it is over priced and they are not accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business the (AASCB)or the AICPA which are vital organizations when trying to pursue any form of accounting, do your research. and I know from experience, I have earned my associates through university of phoenix, and then I transferred to University of Missouri, and none of my credits transferred, and after an additional three years I had my bachelors degree and now I am working on my masters, point being, do your research before chosing a school. -

The how-to guide is a bit vague, I am an accounting major and what I have learned is that for standard bookkeeping, depending on the area you live in you must have an Associates degree, for most Accounting careers you may need your bachelors and for a CPA you need to have your master's degree in some states before you can even sit for the exam. -

As a bookkeeper I find your how-to guide a bit lacking. Knowledge of computers is essential, but knowing the basics of accounting and how to process paperwork without needing a computer is key. Additionally, many bookkeepers rely heavily on their 10-key and speed along with accuracy will aide in advancement in this field. Strong knowledge of Excel or another similar spreadsheet program is another asset. Bookkeepers are highly valued and often under-rated in the world of finance. Many can do bookkeeping, but few do it well.
