Leading (pronounced led-ing) is the space between lines of text in a document. Adjusting the leading, especially in a page of dense text, often makes the text easier to read. Less space between the lines makes a page look darker; more space makes it look lighter. QuarkXPress 3.3 and 4.0 for Macintosh allow you to change the leading in your Quark documents easily. Windows instructions may vary slightly.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • QuarkXPress (Mac)
  • QuarkXPress (Windows)

Step1
Select the text that you want to change.
Step2
Go to the Style menu and select Leading.
Step3
Choose the desired leading in points (you may have to experiment here).
Step4
Click OK.
Step5
Check to see how the new leading affects the text and the look of the page.
Step6
Adjust the point size up or down until you obtain the result you want.

Tips & Warnings

  • Usually, auto leading looks fine, but in some cases you may want to adjust the leading manually.
