When you create a new document in QuarkXPress 4.0 for Macintosh or Windows, you need to make some basic decisions about your page layout - page size, number of columns on the page, margin width, etc.

QuarkXPress (Mac)
QuarkXPress (Windows)

Step1

Open QuarkXPress.

Step2

Go to the File menu and select New, then select Document.

Step3

Select the page size (U.S. Letter or U.S. Legal, and so on) and the width and height of the page in inches, if appropriate.

Step4

If you want more than one column, enter the number in the Column Guides section.

Step5

Change the gutter width, if necessary; Quark's default is 0.167 inches.

Step6

Enter the number, in inches, that you want for the page margin guides (top, bottom, left, and right).

Step7

Select the Facing Pages box for books and magazines or multiple-page documents; this feature places the first page alone and has subsequent pages face each other in pairs (spreads).

Step8

Select Automatic Text Box so that the specified number of columns and the selected gutter width will appear on the default Master A page, as well as on any document pages you want associated with that master.

Step9

Click OK when you have entered all of the specifications for your new document.

Tips & Warnings

The "gutter" is the space between two pages of a "spread"; it's where the pages would be bound together in a book or magazine.
In QuarkXPress, a "master page" contains basic page layout decisions and elements, such as a repeating folio, header and footer, and margin widths.
You can apply the same master page to all pages in your document or different master pages to different pages or sections. (For example, your index might have a different master page than your chapter pages.)
