Make Cookie-Cutter Candles

Make a plain candle a work of art by adding contrasting wax cutouts.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Choose a base candle for your project. Be sure that your round candles aren't too small in diameter (like tapers) to stick the cutouts on.

  2. Step 2

Melt a colored candle or crayon or make up some colored wax. It should be of a contrasting color for best results.

  3. Step 3

Pour this wax into a glass dish lightly coated with silicone spray. The wax should not be more than 1/8 inch thick.

  4. Step 4

Wait for the wax to solidify. While it's still soft, spray silicone on a cookie cutter and press it into the wax.

  5. Step 5

Pry the scraps from around the shapes with a butter knife and allow the shapes to cool completely.

  6. Step 6

Fill one bowl with hot water and another with ice water. Put a cutout in the hot water to soften it.

  7. Step 7

Press the cutout onto the base candle so that it takes the latter's shape. Then dip the cutout into the ice water to keep the shape.

  8. Step 8

Dab a little bit of hot wax onto the back of the cutout and stick it on the base candle.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some people like to dip the entire finished project in clear wax (this is called overdipping).
  • Cutouts can be made from sheets of beeswax as well.
