-
Step 1
Cut several lengths of colored wax to the height of your mold. The easiest way to do this is to cut up old pillar candles. You can use crayons if the candle will be short.
-
Step 2
Put several chunks of clear wax into the top of a double boiler and set the heat on high. Stir frequently.
-
Step 3
Stir in about 2 tbsp. stearine (also called stearic acid) per 1/2 lb. paraffin. Stearine helps make the wax harder and the candle easier to remove from the mold. You may want to experiment with more or less of this as you get more comfortable making candles.
-
Step 4
Prepare the mold and wick (see Related eHows). You'll want to use wick tabs with these candles.
-
Step 5
Use a candy thermometer to monitor the temperature of the wax. The melting point of paraffin is about 125 degrees F.
-
Step 6
Turn off the heat when the paraffin reaches 180 degrees F.
-
Step 7
Set up the wick (see Related eHows).
-
Step 8
Pour enough hot paraffin into the mold to cover the bottom.
-
Step 9
Allow it to cool slightly and then stick the pieces of colored wax down into it. The paraffin in the bottom should hold the pieces in place as it cools.
-
Step 10
Keep the colored pieces near the outside of the mold so that they will show once it's finished.
-
Step 11
Add scent by shaving off a few pieces from a scent block or adding 1/8 oz. undiluted candle scent for every 1 lb. wax. Stir the wax to evenly distribute the fragrance.
-
Step 12
Pour the clear wax into the mold, filling it completely.
-
Step 13
Allow the completely filled candle to cool, and trim the wick to 1/2 inch.
