How to Set the Default Image Editor With Dreamweaver

In Macromedia Dreamweaver 3, you can double-click an image to launch an image editor while still working on a page. Modifying the default editor allows you to choose your favorite program and easily change your images on the fly. You can even choose different programs for different types of graphics files.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Start the Dreamweaver program.

  2. Step 2

    Click on the Edit menu and choose Preferences, or press Control+U. The Preferences screen will appear.

  3. Step 3

    From the categories listed on the left, choose External Editors.

  4. Step 4

    Select an image file format extension in the first (right) box. Image extensions include JPG and GIF, which are the most common Web graphics formats.

  5. Step 5

    Look for your favorite image editor in the second (left) box. If it is listed, click on it and choose the Make Default button.

  6. Step 6

    Add your image editor by clicking on the + button. Locate the program's executable (.exe) file on your hard disk and select Open. The new program will be listed.

  7. Step 7

    Repeat for any other image extensions.

Tips & Warnings
  • To remove an external editor, click on it and choose the Remove button, which resembles a large minus symbol.
  • Add new image extensions, such as TIFF, by clicking on the Add symbol above the Extensions box.
  • Remove image extensions by clicking on the Remove symbol above the Extensions box.
