A background image can add texture and interest to your Web page. Use a subtle version of your logo or a watermark image associated with your page's contents. This tutorial refers to Dreamweaver 3.0.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Start the Dreamweaver program and open the page that will contain the image.
Step2
Open the Modify menu and choose Page Properties.
Step3
Type the location of the image in the Background Image box, or click on the Browse button to locate and select the image. Click OK.
Step4
Save the page when finished.
Step5
Preview the page by choosing Preview in Browser from the File menu. Select the appropriate browser.

Tips & Warnings

  • To ensure that your image is automatically copied when you transfer your site to a Web server, add the image to your site in Dreamweaver before you add it to the page. See "How to Add an Image to a Web Site With Dreamweaver" in the Related eHows for instructions.
  • To use the same image on all pages in the site, create a template page with the background and other settings you want throughout, then use the template as the basis for each page. See "How to Create a Template Page With Dreamweaver" in the Related eHows for instructions.
  • Make sure your background image is subtle and muted. Overly bright graphics can distract the eye from the text.
  • When using a small image, remember that it will tile across and down the page. Make sure the tiled image isn't distracting.
  • Text should be easily readable over the background. Use light text on dark backgrounds and dark text (black is usually best) on light backgrounds.
  • Some older browsers ignore background settings, as do browsers with images turned off.
