Many companies use Novell Netware as the operating system for their computer networks. Obtaining certification could give you an edge in applying for systems administrator positions with these companies. Additionally, some Novell certification tracks ensure your competency in other network operating systems, letting employers know that you've got a well-rounded skill set.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Novell Self-study Materials
  • Novell Training

Step1
Review the various types of Novell certification, noting the specific skills emphasized by each one.
Step2
Pursue the Certified Novell Administrator (CNA) program if you wish to provide direct software support to users in a variety of network environments.
Step3
Pursue the Certified Novell Engineer (CNE) program if you wish to solve larger support problems (companywide rather than user-specific) and solve advanced network problems.
Step4
Pursue the Master CNE program to provide support for connectivity and integration problems along with complicated network administration issues.
Step5
Pursue the Certified Directory Engineer program if you are an information technology expert wishing to use directory-enabled solutions.
Step6
Locate an authorized Novell training center in your area and attend classes to prepare for the certification exams. Alternatively, you can obtain study guides and prepare by yourself.
Step7
Obtain the appropriate tests from Novell and complete them.

Tips & Warnings

  • Get yourself some hands-on experience before trying to take certification exams. Take classes in systems administration at a local community college or university extension program. Try to get a job as a desktop support specialist (where people call you and say, "Help, my computer's frozen, what should I do?") and encourage the more advanced sys admins to help you learn as you go. Then bolster your practical knowledge with theory: how networks and network protocols work, for example.
