How to Do a Defensive Sweep Check in Roller Hockey

Use the defensive sweep check to sweep your entire stick along the ground and knock the puck free from your opponent's control.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hockey Elbow Pads
  • Hockey Gloves
  • Hockey Shoulder Pads
  • Hockey Sticks
  • In-line Skates
  • In-line Skating Helmets
  • Roller Hockey Goals
  • Roller Hockey Pucks
  • Hockey sticks
  1. Step 1

    Engage your opponent who has the puck, either by skating backward in front of her or alongside her.

  2. Step 2

    Release your lower hand from the stick.

  3. Step 3

    Crouch down low. Realize that while you are in this position, your skating ability is impaired. If you don't act quickly, your opponent will simply skate right by you.

  4. Step 4

    Hold your stick almost flat against the ground.

  5. Step 5

    Sweep your entire stick along the ground, crossing through your opponent's area of control over the puck.

  6. Step 6

    Knock the puck free and try to gain control of it or clear it down the court.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do all of these steps in quick succession, so your opponent doesn't see it coming.
  • Becoming a good backward skater will drastically improve your defensive skills.
  • Always wear proper pads when playing roller hockey.
  • Roller hockey is a physically demanding sport that could result in serious injury. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
