Proper stick technique is essential to roller hockey. Learn how to hold your stick correctly with these simple steps.

From Quick Guide: Roller Hockey
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Put on your gloves.

  2. Step 2

Hold your stick in both hands.

  3. Step 3

Place one hand on the butt (or top) of the stick, with your thumb pointing down.

  4. Step 4

Place your other hand a foot to a foot-and-a-half down the shaft of the stick, with your thumb pointing down.

  5. Step 5

    Take a few forehand swings.

  6. Step 6

Reverse your hands and take another few forehand swings.

  7. Step 7

Ask yourself which swings felt more comfortable. This will be your primary grip, and will be used about 90 percent of the time you are playing.

  8. Step 8

Hold your top hand firmly on the shaft, but keep your bottom hand somewhat loose. You should be able to slide the bottom hand easily up and down the shaft.

  9. Step 9

Keep your stick low when playing, and never use it against another player.

Tips & Warnings
  • Measure your stick while wearing skates - with the blade of the stick flat on the ground, the stick should come up to your chin.
  • Always wear proper pads when playing roller hockey.
  • Roller hockey is a physically demanding sport that could result in serious injury. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.

on 1/5/2006 1. Do not squeeze your stick to death, this will only make your muscles tired when you actually need them to do something with the puck.

2. When skating with out the puck, it is very common to drop your bottom hand off the stick and open your top hand up so the palm is half way in between facing up and you. When doing this, you will want to keep your normal arm motion going, just push the stick back and forth as your arms move but try to keep the blade of the stick from going side to side. Last, keep it slightly farther away from your body then your two handed stance. This will enable you to get a better lean forward and thus go faster.

3. This may seem obvious to some, but I have seen far too many people trying to play this way to let it go unsaid. When gripping a hockey stick the top hand will be positioned so that the palm is on top of the stick (if your wearing gloves, the top will be facing up/out) and the bottom hand is positioned so the palm is going under the stick (if wearing gloves the palm will be up/out).
