How to Backward Cross-Step Turn on In-Line Skates

When skating backward at a high speed, the best way to turn is the backward cross-step. This turn may feel awkward at first, but stick with it and you'll be an expert in no time.

Difficulty: Moderately challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Athletic Socks
  • In-line Skate Axles
  • In-line Skate Spacers
  • In-line Skate Wheels
  • In-line Skates
  • In-line Skating Gear
  • In-line Skating Protective Gear Sets
  1. Step 1
     

    Skate backward, looking over your shoulder to see where you are turning.

  2. Step 2
     

    Stagger your skates and start leaning into your turn. Your outside skate should be the one that is more forward.

  3. Step 3
     

    Slide your outside skate in front of the inside skate.

  4. Step 4
     

    Push off with your outside skate after crossing over.

  5. Step 5
     

    Lift your inside skate up as you are pushing off and cross it back to the normal riding position.

  6. Step 6

    Stagger your skates and slide the outside skate across, and in front of, your inside skate again to repeat the entire process until your turn is complete.

Tips & Warnings
  • The cross-step skate never really leaves the ground more than an inch or so.
  • Properly executed, this turn should allow you to increase your speed.
  • Always wear knee pads, elbow pads and a helmet when in-line skating.
